Information regarding Askel Veur

Askel Veur is a Corporate Member by the hand of the Diocesan Director of Education, Simon Cade.

The Diocese of Truro is the statutory provider of 44 Church Schools in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. As Academy Member, Site Trustee, or academy sponsor the diocese serves more than 130 schools in 15 academy trusts and the maintained sector. 

The Member function of the diocese is for the whole trust as well as any church schools. Askel Veur will bring its wide experience and insight to promote the objects of the Trust.

The Trustees are both charity trustees and company directors and have the legal responsibility for conducting the business of the trust. They may choose to delegate certain powers to committees or to the local governing boards in accordance with a Scheme of Delegated Authority (SoDA).

In particular, Trustees have responsibility to:

  • ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • hold executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • oversee the financial performance of the organisation and make sure its money is well spent.

Phil Orwin

Phil Orwin is a career NHS manager and management consultant and has for the last 13 years worked independently with some of the most challenged NHS organizations and systems within the NHS.

Phil’s NHS career spans close on 30 years, of which 20 years have been in director or accountable officer roles. Phil regularly supports challenged organizations and health systems and is a financial and operational turnaround expert. Phil’s most recent assignment was as the interim Chief Operating Officer for University Hospitals North Midlands. Phil’s academic background is History, having graduated from the University of London with a BA Hons. Phil also holds a diploma and MSc in Management, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a Member of the Institute of Interim Management. Phil, supported by the diocese, is currently studying for a Certificate in School Governance.

Phil has been a Governor of Archbishop Benson SAT in Truro for two years. Phil is also the Chair of United Social Ventures, a UK international development charity which works with and supports entrepreneurs in Uganda to develop self-sustaining business which deliver social benefit.

Bill Stuart-White

Canon Bill Stuart-White has been Parish Priest of All Saints, Falmouth since May 2018. He also leads Transforming Mission Falmouth, an initiative to help the Church of England reach the younger generations.

Prior to that appointment he served as Archdeacon of Cornwall for 6 years, working as part of the Bishop of Truro's Staff to oversee the work of the Church of England in mid and west Cornwall. In that capacity he also served on the Truro Diocesan Board of Education and as Member of two Cornish Multi Academy Trusts. He has previously been Parish Priest in Camborne, Wadebridge and the Tamar Valley. In each of these places, and previously in Birmingham and Leeds, he served on the Boards of Governors of both Church and Community primary schools.

Karen Bond

Karen has been involved in school governance for the past ten years. Karen has been a Chair of Governors in a large primary school and was also Chair of Trustees for Crofty Multi Academy Trust for two years. She is also a National Leader of Governance (NLG).

Karen is a member of Cornwall’s Fostering and Permanence Panel. She has a BA Hons Degree in Professional Practice in Education and is currently studying part time for a Master’s degree in Leadership and Management in Education.

Karen’s drive and passion for governance comes from wanting to ensure all children receive the very best education that all children deserve.

Dave Baker

Dave Baker is Chief Executive Officer of The Olympus Academy Trust which is currently responsible for Abbeywood Community School, Bradley Stoke Community School, Callicroft Primary Academy, Charborough Road Primary School, Filton Hill Primary School, Meadowbrook Primary School, Patchway Community School, Stoke Lodge Primary School and Winterbourne Academy which are all in South Gloucestershire and within 4 miles of one another. Dave was the first Headteacher of Bradley Stoke Community School which opened in September 2005 and grew a year group at a time until the oldest students completed year 13 in 2012. The school added a primary phase on site which opened in September 2015 and is now growing a year group at a time.

Dave was asked by the Local Authority and both schools’ Governing Bodies to take on interim responsibility for Abbeywood Community School in October 2011. Abbeywood became an academy on 1st January 2013, sponsored by The Olympus Academy Trust. This was the starting point for the Trust’s partnership work which has continued to grow and has since developed a strong reputation locally with responsibility for 6400 learners and 850 staff. 4 of the 9 schools in the Trust have been re-brokered from other Trusts and 3 were judged inadequate by Ofsted and were in need of special measures when they joined Olympus.

Dave has taught in and around Bristol since 1987. He is passionate about improving the life chances of young people and broadening their horizons. He believes strongly in collaborative approaches to teaching, learning and leadership and wants to help nurture the leaders of tomorrow. He wants the schools he works with to support and work with their local communities. Dave contributes to local, regional and national leadership training programmes for various organisations and is a National Leader of Education. He was an elected member of the Headteacher Board for the South-West of England from 2014-17 and currently coordinates a multi-academy trust leaders’ network for the South West region.

Dave swims every morning, surfs the Severn Bore, plays and coaches basketball and is a Bristol City FC season ticket holder. He is also a Trustee for Bristol City Robins Foundation.

Mark Eades

Mark has worked in Human Resources in the public sector for over 30 years mostly in the NHS but more recently in the higher education sector and the civil service.  Mark is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development but also holds a NEBOSH diploma in Occupational Safety & Health and at one time taught on the NEBOSH diploma at Bristol University.

Mark and his family have lived near Truro for over 17 years and away from work he likes to spend his time walking, watching rugby, reading and Scouting; he has been an adult leader in the Scout movement for over 20 years holding a variety of roles supporting young people.
